Fred Stambrook


Fred Stambrook moved to Winnipeg from Austria and soon became involved in the local soccer scene.

In 1970, he volunteered with the Crescentwood Community Club as convenor of the club's soccer program. He also served on the Executive of the Manitoba Minor Soccer Association. In the mid seventies he was elected first Vice President of the MMSA, and that same year he served as Executive of the Canadian Minor Soccer Association. Fred was President of the Canadian Youth Soccer Association from 1975-1979 and served on the board of the Canadian Soccer Association for twelve years until 1986. Fred was also elected President of the CSA for three consecutive terms. Prior to this he served as President of the Manitoba Soccer Association from 1980-1986. He also held past President duties for the CSA from 1992-1998 and sat on the board of the Canadian Olympic Association from 1986-1992 and again in 1998.

Fred took a leading role in the writing of the MSA's constitution and played a key role in the relocation of soccer from Alexander Park to the Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex. In 1988, as a Canadian representative for FIFA, he helped formulate the rules from women's international soccer. From 1990-1994. he served as a member of the FIFA Appeals Committee and on the Winnipeg Pan-Am Games Bid Committee in the early nineties.

Fred's lifelong commitment to soccer was recognized with a life membership to the Canadian Soccer Association in 1999 and to the Manitoba Soccer Association in 2002. Fred received the Queen Elizabeth Silver Jubilee Medal in 1977, and the Aubrey Sanford Meritorious Award in 1993.

He was inducted as a sports-builder into the Manitoba Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 1999 and as a builder for the sport of soccer into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame in 2003. In 2006 Fred was inducted into the Canada Soccer Hall of Fame as an honoured builder, and in 2018 was inducted into the Manitoba Soccer Hall of Fame.
